New Year’s proposed changes to the Skilled Migration Occupation Lists

The Australian Government announced on 30 June 2017 that they will update the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) and Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) on a six-month basis to ensure they remain relevant and responsive to the needs of the Australian labour market. The next update to these lists is expected this January 2018.

Australia’s Department of Employment, responsible for undertaking a regular review of the List of Occupations recently proposed possible changes to the list of occupations. These include occupations flagged for removal and few occupations for addition on the current STSOL. Those flagged for a change are listed below:

STSOL occupations that are flagged for possible complete removal

  • Recruitment Consultant 223112
  • Building Associate 312112
  • Accommodation and Hospitality Managers NEC 141999
  • Hair or Beauty Salon Manager 142114

STSOL occupations not currently on the lists that are flagged for addition

  • Real Estate Agent 612114
  • Real Estate Representative 612115
  • University Tutor 242112
  • Psychotherapist 272314
  • Property Manager 612112

We currently predict no changes will be made to the list based from the announcement of Department of Employment that the Australian Government prioritizes continuity after the drastic changes on the list that happened last April and July 2017. However, should any changes occur then we will detail those changes and recommendations on our blog.
