The Rise Of PTE Academic & Fall Of IELTS, In The Philippines

Originally known as IDP Education Australia, IDP was established in the Philippines in 1985 as support for multilaterally-funded aid programs. Over time, the focus of IDP Philippines shifted towards student recruitment and administration of IELTS examinations.

Currently IDP Philippines have offices in Manila and Cebu. The IDP Manila office offers student services and is an IELTS Test Centre.

IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment. Since its launch in 1989, IELTS has become an English language proficiency test standard until recently where ‘it is now facing very stiff competition from The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)’.

PTE Academic is a computer-based test of English and can be used for a SkillSelect immigration application for Australia from the Philippines. Typically, PTE Academic Exam can be registered online within 3 days prior an applicant’s chosen schedule and results can be viewed within five business days, through the applicant’s official PTE account.

To take PTE Academic Exam, the applicant needs to attend a secure Pearson test centre and complete the three-hour test session. The applicant will use a computer and headset to listen to, read and respond to the twenty different tasks types.

The test has 3 main parts; Listening and Speaking modules are combined in one session, while listening and reading are separate sections.

The use of technology in the PTE English Testing process has created a more practical and technology based i.e. using the computer to test a SkillSelect applicant’s English proficiency.

Currently, other than two assessing authorities, a vast majority of Assessing Authorities in Australia accept a PTE English Test result for acquiring a favourable qualification assessment of them. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection accepted PTE as alternative English test for SkillSelect visa applications lodged on or after 23 November 2014.

If you are a professional Filipino skilled person and would like to know more about migration to Australia then RESPALL (Migration) Australia is offering a Free SkillSelect Visa Assessment Seminar at Makati City on November 18, 2017.
